Adrienne's story

Created by Jack 10 years ago
Adrienne was born on 2nd August 1949 in Liverpool, only daughter of Kevin and Rose Carroll. She studied at Notre Dame High School and Ethel Wormald College where she qualified to become a teacher. She grew up loving horses and riding, especially her beloved pony Pampa, shared with her best friend Gaye. In her youth she was a prolific writer of poetry and she enjoyed reading (voraciously, every kind of fiction), music, dancing and dressmaking. And having a good time with her many, many friends. Adrienne developed a love of folk music, particularly traditional songs, listening to them and singing too in folk clubs and at the annual festivals we regularly went to as a family. She was a fine singer, often praised for her clear, strong delivery which could also be tender and light. Adrienne and I first met at the Everyman Bistro in 1971. Soon after, we were sharing a flat in Ullet Road in a house full of friends and freaky fun, a legendary time. We were married in 1974 and moved to our own home in Knotty Ash in 1976. Chris was born in 1979 and Hannah in 1982. Adrienne started teaching at St Francis Primary School in 1971 and after working in several other schools she came back again to St Francis in 1979 for what was to be the major part of her career. She specialised in teaching children with moderate learning difficulties and eventually headed up the dedicated Resource Base for pupils with a wide range of special needs. She was a passionate advocate of inclusion, supporting and leading her colleagues to improve teaching standards and fairness of educational opportunities for all children. Adrienne cared deeply for her Mum and Dad, in their later years looking after them when they became seriously ill even though she herself was secretly suffering from breast cancer. And she was kind and supportive to friends when they needed help, always so generous with her time and care. The light of Adrienne's life was without a doubt Chris and Hannah. She was so proud of their musical and academic achievements, but, more than anything else, what great people they'd turned out to be. She was caring, clever, fun and enthusiastic and those qualities burn brightly in Chris and Hannah. They are her greatest achievement and legacy to the world. Adrienne was my whole life, she believed in me, supported me, tolerated me, shared her life and love with me. I was such a lucky man.
